Why Franta Uses Double Solution Heat Treatment for Stainless Steel Fittings

For building water supply and drainage systems, true quality is not tested at the moment installation is completed, but over decades of continuous operation. In large commercial complexes, hospitals, schools, hotels, transportation hubs, and other projects, corrosion, leakage, or cracking in a piping system can result in high repair costs and may disrupt normal building operations, causing water outages, business interruptions, and other related risks. However, these problems do not always begin during service. Many potential risks can originate much earlier in the manufacturing process.

Many projects have encountered similar problems:
·Premature corrosion at welds or connection points;
·Products meet requirements during installation but develop leakage after a period of operation;
·Localized deformation or even cracking occurs under complex operating conditions.
For this reason, the long-term reliability of a stainless steel piping system depends not only on installation quality, but also on a critical manufacturing process that is often overlooked — heat treatment. Today, we take a closer look at the double solution heat treatment process that Franta continues to apply to its stainless steel fittings.
Solution Heat Treatment: Restoring Stable Stainless Steel Performance
If stainless steel is compared to a well-trained team, the high temperatures and mechanical stresses generated during forming, machining, and welding can disrupt its originally stable internal structure. Solution heat treatment involves heating the material to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it, helping restore a more uniform and stable metallurgical structure.

In simple terms, the process acts like a “high-temperature reset” for stainless steel. It helps eliminate structural non-uniformity, residual stress, and precipitates generated during processing, allowing the material to return to a more stable condition. After solution heat treatment, stainless steel can better utilize its inherent corrosion resistance while further improving mechanical properties and dimensional stability, providing a solid foundation for reliable long-term performance.
Double Solution Heat Treatment: Franta’s Two-Stage Quality Protection
In the industry, many manufacturers proceed to subsequent production stages after a single solution heat treatment. Franta applies a more stringent process standard — double solution heat treatment.
First Solution Heat Treatment: Building the Foundation for Precision Manufacturing
At the tube blank stage, Franta performs the first solution heat treatment to soften the material, reduce hardness, and improve ductility, providing more stable processing characteristics for subsequent machining and socket forming. A stable material condition not only improves manufacturing consistency but also directly affects the dimensional accuracy of stainless steel fittings.
With the first solution heat treatment, Franta can more precisely control socket dimensions, helping keep the compression deformation of the sealing ring within a suitable range of 20%–25% during press fitting.
Excessive compression can accelerate sealing ring aging and shorten its service life, while insufficient compression may reduce sealing performance and increase the risk of future leakage.

Second Solution Heat Treatment: Improving the Stability and Reliability of Finished Products
After all machining and welding processes are completed, Franta performs a second solution heat treatment. This stage serves several important purposes:
·Restoring the welding heat-affected zone: Helps create a more uniform weld structure and brings weld performance closer to that of the base material, improving overall corrosion resistance;
·Relieving residual processing stress: Reduces the risk of deformation or cracking caused by stress concentration during long-term service and improves product stability;
·Improving surface quality: Bright solution heat treatment helps prevent oxidation and discoloration, resulting in cleaner surfaces and greater dimensional stability;
·Improving installation reliability: Higher manufacturing precision enables more accurate fitting connections and more uniform loading on sealing rings, helping improve joint reliability and service life.
For these reasons, Franta maintains a higher manufacturing standard, helping every stainless steel fitting achieve improved corrosion resistance, reliable mechanical performance, and more stable material properties before leaving the factory.
Every Manufacturing Process Reflects a Commitment to Quality
For building water supply and drainage systems, true quality is not simply what can be seen when installation is completed. It is demonstrated through stable operation over decades and through the ability to withstand long-term environmental and operating conditions.
Double solution heat treatment may appear to be only one step in the manufacturing process, but it directly influences corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, dimensional stability, and connection reliability. It is also an important foundation for the safe and reliable long-term operation of stainless steel piping systems.

For more than 20 years, Franta has focused on stainless steel piping systems and continuously refined every manufacturing process to higher standards. From raw materials to finished products, and from precision manufacturing to quality control, every step is carefully managed to deliver reliable stainless steel pipes and fittings built for long-term performance.
