Franta Upgrades Residential Secondary Water Supply with Stainless Steel Piping

Oriental Metropolis in Haining is a 340,000-square-meter residential community with more than 2,600 households. After nearly a decade of operation, its secondary water supply system faced aging pipelines, water quality fluctuations, and unstable water pressure. Franta provided a stainless steel piping system solution using 304 and 316L stainless steel pipes, press-fit connections, and grooved fittings to improve water quality, pressure stability, corrosion resistance, and long-term system reliability.

  To address unstable water quality, aging pipelines, and fluctuating water pressure, Haining Oriental Metropolis Residential Community conducted a comprehensive assessment of its secondary water supply system to meet local renovation standards in Haining. Franta provided a stainless steel water supply piping system solution for the upgrade.

Project Background

  Oriental Metropolis is located at the intersection of Biyun Road and Zanshan Road in Haining, within an urban development area southeast of the city center centered around Juanhu Park. With a total construction area of approximately 340,000 square meters, the community consists of 20 high-rise residential buildings and one clubhouse, serving more than 2,600 households. The development was completed and delivered in 2016. After nearly a decade of operation, its secondary water supply system began facing issues such as pipeline aging and fluctuations in water quality.

  In response to Haining's initiative to improve the “last mile” of urban water supply infrastructure and accelerate the upgrading of secondary water supply facilities, the project selected Franta stainless steel piping and matching connection technologies.

Project Solution

  Franta provided a customized stainless steel water supply piping solution based on different installation conditions:

  1) Exposed piping: 304 stainless steel pipes were used. DN15-50 pipes adopted press-fit connections, while pipes above DN50 used grooved connection technology.

  2) Underground piping: 316L stainless steel pipes were selected to meet long-term corrosion resistance requirements in humid underground environments.

  Press-fit connections were completed using dedicated hydraulic tools, eliminating the need for on-site welding, threading, or roll-grooving operations. Grooved connections were used for larger-diameter pipelines. All piping products undergo 20 manufacturing processes and six inspection stages.

Before and After the Secondary Water Supply Upgrade

  Before renovation: The community's original secondary water supply pipelines were mainly galvanized steel pipes with some PPR piping. After nearly ten years of operation, corrosion had developed on the inner walls of the galvanized pipes. Rust accumulation reduced the effective pipe diameter and increased flow resistance, leading some residents to experience yellow or reddish water. Some PPR pipe joints also developed leakage due to insufficient heat fusion during installation, resulting in increasing maintenance frequency. In addition, the material can allow light transmission, creating conditions that may affect pipeline hygiene. Aging pipelines also reduced water flow capacity, with noticeable water pressure fluctuations during peak demand periods.

  After renovation: The original pipelines were replaced with Franta stainless steel piping. 304 stainless steel features low internal surface roughness, strong corrosion resistance, low scaling tendency, and an opaque pipe wall, helping provide a cleaner water distribution environment and significantly improving outlet water quality. This eliminated the yellow water issues associated with pipeline corrosion. Press-fit and grooved connection technologies provide reliable joint sealing and help maintain stable system pressure. Underground sections use 316L stainless steel to meet corrosion resistance requirements in humid underground environments.

  Customer feedback: “Residents previously reported yellowish water and unstable water pressure. When we inspected the site, the old pipelines were indeed heavily corroded. This time we used Franta stainless steel piping products, and the installation experience was noticeably different. Different pipe diameters were connected using press-fit and grooved systems. The press-fit joints were formed quickly with the tool, and the grooved couplings were also fast to secure.
